March question

Thursday, March 20th, 2008

In what new or expanded ways are people contributing to your community?
The thrift store name contest got 53 entries, 40 from people that have never been involved in the Horizon II project.
2 board members of the thrift store are emerging leaders that are new to our projects.
I have received several calls about donating to the thrift store.
Area groups are wanting to volunteer time to get the store ready to open.

Thrift Store and More

Thursday, March 20th, 2008

The name of the Thrift Store has been decided, Thift Store and More. The winning entry was by a local youth, Brody Ness, he has won the $25 in Chamber Bucks. He entered his name at the Farm and Home show in February.
A board has been selected and all the paper work to open a business is starting. The Thriftstore accepted donations from the church rummage sale March 15 and I am already receiving calls on donations of furniture to sell and racks to use.
There was 53 entries to the name contest so the community is getting involved in this project.
Thank you to everyone that is participating in getting the thrift store going.

Recruiting leaders

Wednesday, February 27th, 2008

What changes have been made in the way your community recruits and trains new leaders?
I think we used to try to recruit in a larger non personal way, now we are trying to look at our community and ask ourselves who could we invite to help us.

Community Leadership

Are different kinds of people (representing more sectors or parts of the community) now participating in community leadership?

A younger segemnt of our population is getting involved in the Horizon projects. Local clubs are seeing a greater number of students participating. Horizons is targeting Jr High and High School students to start blogging.

February Questions

Wednesday, February 27th, 2008

What kinds of concrete steps are being taken by your community to address poverty?
The Horizons group has made the decision to go ahead with the Thrift Store idea. A building has been secured and volunteers are being found. Change Presho containers are being placed in business’s to collect money for startup costs. A name contest is being held to get community interest. A board is being assembled to oversee the Change Presho projects, this includes the Thrift Store. A business plan is being prepared for the Thrift Store. There are many concrete steps being taken to get closer to our goal of opeing a Thift Store in Presho.

Change Presho

Wednesday, February 13th, 2008

The canisters for the project have been ordered and should be here soon. I have talked with Pastor Lori and I will meet with the Youth Group on Feb. 26.
We should have a canister at the Farm and Home show and a very good explanation what Change Presho is. Since the Thrift Store is what the community was interested in having the money used for that is also a issue we need to be well versed in. I am currently working on lots of info for the Thrift Store and will make another post on that before the Farm and Home Show.
We need to decide which business’s the canisters will go in and who will be in charge of getting the money collected and where that money will be kept. Lots of questions, we need to have a meeting as soon as possible.
